(Pitting Edema)
Heart Disease
Kidney Disease
Liver Disease
Venous Insufficiency
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Thyroid Disorder
শরীরে Albumin/Protein কমে যাওয়া
Pregnancy
Inflammation
Lymphatic System-
Blood Pressure ও Pulse Measurement
Oxygen Saturation
Kidney Function Tests
Liver Function Tests
Serum Albumin/Protein
Electrolyte Tests
Blood Glucose ও HbA1c
Thyroid Function Tests
Urine Test ও Urine Protein/Albumin
ECG
Echocardiography
Chest X-ray
Vascular Investigations
Compression Therapy
* নিয়মিত Monitoring ও Follow-up
Frequently Asked Questions

Swelling of Hands and Feet
Swelling of the hands and feet, also known as Swelling or Edema, occurs when excess fluid accumulates in the body's tissues, causing the hands, feet, ankles or other areas to become enlarged.
Temporary swelling can occur after prolonged standing or sitting or excessive salt intake. However, Heart Disease, Kidney Disease, Liver Disease, problems with venous circulation, certain medications, Thyroid Disorders or low Protein levels can also cause Edema.
Common Symptoms
Swelling may be associated with—
Visible swelling of the feet, ankles or hands
Tight or shiny skin
A temporary indentation after pressing the swollen area (Pitting Edema)
Tight-fitting shoes, socks, rings or watches
Heavy or uncomfortable legs
Difficulty or discomfort while walking
Pain, redness or warmth over the swollen area
Shortness of breath or worsening breathlessness when lying down
What Can Cause Swelling?
Possible causes include—
Prolonged standing or sitting
Excessive salt intake
Heart Failure or other Heart Disease
Kidney Disease
Liver Disease
Venous Insufficiency or impaired venous circulation
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Thyroid Disorders
Low Albumin or Protein levels
Pregnancy
Side effects of certain medications
Local Infection or Inflammation
Lymphatic System disorders
Excess weight or Obesity
Swelling in both legs and sudden swelling in one leg can have very different causes. The pattern of swelling and associated symptoms are therefore important.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Medical evaluation is recommended when swelling occurs repeatedly, persists for several days, gradually increases or begins to interfere with daily activities.
Evaluation is particularly important when swelling is accompanied by Shortness of Breath, chest discomfort, unusual fatigue, changes in urination, rapid weight gain or abdominal swelling.
How Is It Diagnosed?
The evaluation considers when the swelling began, whether it affects one or both sides, when it becomes worse, whether there is pain and whether other symptoms are present.
Depending on the situation, investigations may include—
Blood Pressure and Pulse Measurement
Oxygen Saturation
Kidney Function Tests
Liver Function Tests
Serum Albumin/Protein
Electrolyte Tests
Blood Glucose and HbA1c
Thyroid Function Tests
Urine Test and Urine Protein/Albumin
ECG
Echocardiography
Chest X-ray
Leg Doppler Ultrasound, particularly when DVT is suspected
Other Heart, Kidney, Liver or Vascular Investigations when appropriate
Not every patient requires all of these tests. Investigations are selected according to the initial assessment.
General Information About Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the swelling.
Management may include—
Reducing excessive salt intake
Individualized advice regarding Fluid Intake
Treatment of Heart Disease or Heart Failure
Management of Kidney or Liver Disease
Appropriate treatment of Venous Disease
Prompt specific treatment when DVT is diagnosed
Treatment of Thyroid Disorders or Protein Deficiency
Diuretics when medically indicated

* Regular Monitoring and Follow-up
Diuretics or water tablets should not be started on your own. Incorrect use can disturb the body's Fluid and Electrolyte balance.
When Is Urgent Medical Care Needed?
Seek urgent medical attention if swelling is accompanied by—
Sudden severe Shortness of Breath
Chest pain or pressure
Sudden swelling of one leg with pain, redness or warmth
Coughing up blood together with Shortness of Breath
Fainting or severe dizziness
Blue lips or face
A sudden major reduction in urine output
Rapid generalized swelling with Shortness of Breath
Confusion or reduced consciousness
Rapid deterioration of the overall condition
Frequently Asked Questions
