Anaemia
Diabetes
Thyroid Disorders
Heart Disease
Chronic Lung Disease
Sleep Apnea বা অন্যান্য Sleep Disorders
Vitamin বা Nutritional Deficiency
Kidney বা Liver Disease
Rheumatological Disease

Blood Pressure ও Pulse Measurement
Oxygen Saturation
CBC ও Haemoglobin
Blood Glucose ও HbA1c
Thyroid Function Tests
Kidney Function Tests
Liver Function Tests
Electrolyte Tests
Iron/Ferritin বা অন্যান্য Nutritional Tests
Urine Tests
ECG
Chest X-ray
Spirometry বা Lung Function Tests
Sleep Apnea সন্দেহ হলে Sleep Study

নিয়মিত Monitoring ও Follow-up

Frequently Asked Questions

Doctor Consultation

Persistent Fatigue

Persistent Fatigue refers to ongoing unusual tiredness, lack of energy or reduced ability to perform normal daily activities despite adequate sleep and rest.

It may occur because of excessive physical activity or inadequate sleep, but it can also be associated with Anaemia, Chronic Infection, Thyroid Disorders, Diabetes, Heart or Lung Disease, Sleep Disorders, Nutritional Deficiencies or side effects of certain medications.

Common Symptoms

Persistent Fatigue may be associated with—

Feeling tired or exhausted throughout the day
Not feeling refreshed even after adequate sleep
Becoming unusually tired after minor activities
Becoming weak quickly while walking or climbing stairs
Reduced ability to perform daily activities
Difficulty concentrating or maintaining focus
Light-headedness or a heavy-headed feeling
Muscle weakness or muscle aches
Shortness of Breath or Palpitations
Sleep problems
* Changes in appetite or body weight

What Can Cause Persistent Fatigue?

Possible causes include—

Anaemia
Chronic or recurrent infections
Diabetes
Thyroid Disorders
Heart Disease
Chronic Lung Disease
Sleep Apnea or other Sleep Disorders
Vitamin or Nutritional Deficiencies
Kidney or Liver Disease
Chronic inflammatory or Rheumatological Disease
Prolonged physical inactivity
Side effects of certain medications
* Chronic sleep deprivation or irregular sleep

The duration of the fatigue, whether it is present throughout the day or worse at certain times, and how much it improves with rest can provide important clues.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Medical evaluation is recommended when fatigue persists for several weeks, does not improve despite adequate sleep and rest, or begins to affect daily activities, study, work or walking capacity.

Evaluation is particularly important when fatigue is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, night sweats, Shortness of Breath, Palpitations, chest discomfort, swelling of the legs or changes in urination.

How Is It Diagnosed?

The assessment begins with understanding the duration and pattern of fatigue, sleep quality, diet, daily activity, medications and associated symptoms.

Depending on the situation, investigations may include—

Blood Pressure and Pulse Measurement
Oxygen Saturation
CBC and Haemoglobin
Blood Glucose and HbA1c
Thyroid Function Tests
Kidney Function Tests
Liver Function Tests
Electrolyte Tests
Iron/Ferritin or other Nutritional Tests
Urine Tests
ECG
Chest X-ray
Spirometry or Lung Function Tests
Sleep Study when Sleep Apnea is suspected
* Other investigations when appropriate

Not every patient requires all of these tests. Investigations are selected according to the symptoms and clinical assessment.

General Information About Treatment

Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the fatigue.

Management may include—

Treatment of Anaemia or Nutritional Deficiencies
Diabetes and Thyroid Disorder management
Appropriate treatment of Heart or Lung Disease
Treatment of Sleep Apnea or other Sleep Disorders
Cause-specific treatment of Chronic Infection
Improving diet and nutritional status when appropriate
Establishing regular sleep and rest habits
Gradually increasing physical activity according to physical capacity
Adjusting or reviewing medications when appropriate
Regular Monitoring and Follow-up

Vitamins, Iron, Steroids or other medications should not be started on your own simply to treat fatigue.

When Is Urgent Medical Care Needed?

Seek urgent medical attention if persistent fatigue is accompanied by—

Severe or sudden Shortness of Breath
Severe or new chest pain or pressure
Fainting or near-fainting
Sudden weakness or numbness affecting one side of the body
Difficulty speaking or sudden confusion
Blue lips or face
Very fast or irregular heartbeat with severe weakness
Significant or unusual bleeding
* Rapid deterioration of the overall condition

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Persistent Fatigue always mean I have Anaemia?

No. Anaemia is one possible cause, but Thyroid Disorders, Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, Heart or Lung Disease, infections and several other conditions can also cause persistent fatigue.

What should I do if I feel tired even after getting enough sleep?

If this happens regularly and continues for several weeks, the underlying cause should be evaluated. If you also have loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep or excessive daytime sleepiness, Sleep Apnea may need to be assessed.

Can Shortness of Breath with fatigue indicate a Lung Problem?

It can. However, Anaemia, Heart Disease and other medical conditions can also cause both fatigue and Shortness of Breath. A complete assessment is therefore important.

Will taking Vitamins automatically improve Persistent Fatigue?

Not necessarily. Vitamins may help when a specific Nutritional Deficiency is present. If the underlying cause is different, taking Vitamins alone may not resolve the problem.

Is long-term fatigue simply a normal part of ageing?

Not always. Although physical strength and exercise tolerance can change with age, new or excessive persistent fatigue should still be evaluated for possible underlying causes.
