Pneumonia
Acute lung infection with fever, cough and breathing difficulty

Asthma, COPD
Chest X-ray
Oxygen Saturation
Blood tests
Sputum
Chest CT Scan
Microbiological tests
Oxygen therapy
Frequently Asked Questions

Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs in which inflammation develops in the small air sacs (Alveoli). These air sacs may fill with fluid or inflammatory material, which can interfere with normal oxygen exchange and cause symptoms such as cough, fever and breathlessness.
Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses and, in some cases, other microorganisms. Its severity can vary depending on the cause, the patient's age and their overall health.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms of pneumonia may include—
Fever or chills
Cough, sometimes with sputum
Yellow or greenish sputum may occur
Shortness of breath
Rapid breathing
Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing
Weakness and fatigue
Loss of appetite
Headache or body aches
Confusion or changes in behavior, particularly in older adults
Not every patient will experience all of these symptoms.
What Can Increase the Risk?
The risk of pneumonia can be higher in certain situations, including—
Viral or bacterial respiratory infections
Older age
Young children due to age-related vulnerability
Asthma, COPD or other chronic lung diseases
Diabetes or certain chronic medical conditions
A weakened immune system
Smoking
Prolonged hospitalization or serious illness
* Difficulty swallowing or an increased risk of food or liquid entering the airways
When Should You See a Doctor?
You should consult a doctor if you have fever with cough, shortness of breath, chest pain or significant weakness.
Respiratory infections can become more serious more quickly in older adults, young children and people with chronic medical conditions. If symptoms are worsening, medical evaluation should not be delayed.
How Is Pneumonia Diagnosed?
Diagnosis begins with an assessment of the patient's symptoms and physical condition.
Depending on the situation, your doctor may recommend—
Chest X-ray
Oxygen Saturation measurement
Blood tests
Sputum testing
Chest CT Scan when appropriate
Other Microbiological tests in selected cases
Not every patient needs every test. Investigations are selected according to the patient's age, symptoms, clinical condition and suspected cause of infection.
General Information About Treatment
Treatment depends mainly on the cause of the infection and the patient's clinical condition.
For bacterial pneumonia, the doctor may prescribe Antibiotics when appropriate. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections; certain viral infections may require Antiviral treatment when indicated.
Additional treatment may include—
Management of fever and pain
Adequate fluids and rest
Oxygen therapy
Supportive treatment for breathing difficulties
* Hospital treatment for severe cases
Antibiotics should not be started without medical advice, and prescribed treatment should not be stopped prematurely simply because symptoms have improved.
When Is Urgent Medical Care Needed?
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop—
Severe or rapidly worsening shortness of breath
Bluish lips, tongue or face
Very rapid breathing or severe difficulty breathing
Severe chest pain
Unusual drowsiness, confusion or loss of consciousness
Significant coughing up of blood
* Severe weakness or rapid deterioration of your condition
Frequently Asked Questions
Is pneumonia contagious?
Some causes of pneumonia, particularly certain viral and bacterial infections, can spread from person to person. However, pneumonia itself does not always spread directly between people in the same way.
Does pneumonia only occur during winter?
No. Pneumonia can occur at any time of the year. However, some respiratory viruses are more common during particular seasons.
Does everyone with pneumonia need Antibiotics?
No. Antibiotics work against bacteria. Pneumonia can be caused by bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms, so treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Can pneumonia be completely cured?
Many patients recover completely with appropriate treatment. However, older adults, young children and people with significant underlying medical conditions may have a higher risk of complications.
How long can a cough last after pneumonia?
Cough and fatigue may continue for some time even after the infection has improved. If symptoms do not improve, fever returns or breathlessness worsens, medical reassessment is recommended.
