(Wheezing)

Irritant
Respiratory Infection
Trigger

Oxygen Saturation
Chest X-ray
Spirometry বা Lung Function Test
Blood tests
Sputum
CT Scan of Chest

Bronchodilator

Frequently Asked Questions

Bronchitis

Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi, the airways that carry air into and out of the lungs. It can cause cough, mucus production, chest discomfort and sometimes breathlessness.

Bronchitis can be Acute or Chronic. Acute Bronchitis is usually short-term and often develops after a viral respiratory infection. Chronic Bronchitis is associated with long-term cough and mucus production and can be an important component of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Common Symptoms

Bronchitis may cause—

Persistent or recurrent cough
Cough with mucus
Chest heaviness or discomfort
Breathlessness
Wheezing
Throat irritation or sore throat
Mild fever or feeling unwell
Easy fatigue
* Chest discomfort during deep breathing or coughing

After Acute Bronchitis, the cough may continue for some time even after other symptoms improve.

What Can Cause or Trigger Bronchitis?

The causes and triggers can vary. They may include—

Viral respiratory infections
Cigarette or tobacco smoke
Second-hand smoke
Dust and air pollution
Chemical fumes and other Irritants
Long-term smoking
Recurrent Respiratory Infections
Cold air or certain environmental Triggers

Long-term smoking is an important risk factor for Chronic Bronchitis and COPD.

When Should You See a Doctor?

You should seek medical evaluation if your cough persists, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by breathlessness, Wheezing, chest discomfort or excessive mucus.

Persistent cough should not be ignored, particularly in smokers, older adults or people with Asthma, COPD or other existing lung conditions.

How Is Bronchitis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis often begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination. Additional investigations may be recommended when needed to evaluate other possible lung conditions.

Depending on the situation, investigations may include—

Detailed medical history and physical examination
Oxygen Saturation measurement
Chest X-ray
Spirometry or Lung Function Tests
Blood tests
Sputum testing
CT Scan of the Chest when appropriate
Other relevant investigations

Depending on the symptoms, conditions such as Pneumonia, Asthma, COPD, TB or other lung diseases may also need to be considered.

General Information About Treatment

Treatment depends on the type of Bronchitis, its cause and the patient's overall condition.

In many cases of Acute Bronchitis, treatment focuses on symptom relief, adequate rest and supportive care. Antibiotics are not required for every case, particularly when the cause is viral.

Depending on the clinical situation, treatment may include—

Adequate rest and hydration
Symptom management
Appropriate Inhalers or Bronchodilators when Wheezing or breathlessness is present
Complete smoking cessation
Avoiding smoke, dust and other Irritants
Long-term treatment and Follow-up for Chronic Bronchitis or COPD
* Treatment of an underlying cause when identified

Do not start or stop Antibiotics, Steroids or Inhalers on your own.

When Is Urgent Medical Care Needed?

Seek urgent medical attention if you develop—

Severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness
Difficulty speaking because of breathing problems
Blue lips or face
Severe or new chest pain
Significant bleeding when coughing
Severe weakness, dizziness or fainting
* Rapid deterioration of your condition

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bronchitis always caused by bacteria?

No. Viruses are an important cause of Acute Bronchitis, and many cases do not require Antibiotics.

Does Bronchitis always require Antibiotics?

No. Treatment depends on the cause and the patient's clinical condition.

How long can a cough last after Bronchitis?

A cough may continue for some time after Acute Bronchitis even when other symptoms improve. However, a persistent or worsening cough should be evaluated to look for other possible causes.

Can smoking cause Chronic Bronchitis?

Long-term smoking is an important risk factor for Chronic Bronchitis and COPD.

Are Bronchitis and Pneumonia the same condition?

No. They can have overlapping symptoms, but they affect the respiratory system differently. Appropriate evaluation and investigations may be needed to distinguish between them.
