Lymph Node
(TB Meningitis)
Pleura
Lymph Node
Chest X-ray
Blood tests
Sputum
GeneXpert বা অন্যান্য Molecular Test
Ultrasound
Biopsy
Frequently Asked Questions

Tuberculosis in Any Part of the Body
Tuberculosis (TB) is not limited to the lungs. TB bacteria can affect different organs of the body, including lymph nodes, bones and joints, the spine, the covering of the brain, kidneys, the abdomen and other organs. TB occurring outside the lungs is known as Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis.
The symptoms vary depending on which organ is affected. Therefore, persistent or unexplained symptoms may require evaluation for TB when clinically appropriate.
Which Parts of the Body Can Be Affected by TB?
TB can affect different parts of the body, including—
Lungs

Kidneys and urinary tract
Abdomen and intestines
Pleura or the lining around the lungs
* Reproductive organs and other organs
Common Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the affected organ. General symptoms may include—
Persistent or recurrent fever
Night sweats
Loss of appetite
Unexplained weight loss
Persistent weakness and fatigue
Pain or swelling in the affected area
Enlarged Lymph Nodes
Persistent cough or breathlessness
Abdominal pain, bloating or prolonged digestive symptoms

TB cannot always be confirmed from symptoms or a single test alone. Investigations are selected according to the patient's symptoms and clinical findings.
General Information About Treatment
TB is a treatable disease. Treatment depends on the type of TB, the affected organ, the severity of the disease and drug sensitivity.
Treatment usually involves multiple Anti-TB Medicines taken regularly for a specific period. The duration and combination of medicines may vary depending on the type and location of TB.
During treatment—
Take the medicines regularly as prescribed
Do not stop treatment on your own
Report significant side effects to your doctor
Attend scheduled Follow-up appointments and investigations
* Drug-resistant TB may require specific testing and a different treatment approach
Even if you start feeling better, Anti-TB Medicines should not be stopped without medical advice.
When Is Urgent Medical Care Needed?
Seek urgent medical attention if you develop—
Severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness
Loss of consciousness or reduced level of consciousness
Seizures
Severe headache with vomiting or neck stiffness
Sudden weakness or difficulty moving part of the body
Significant bleeding or coughing up a substantial amount of blood
Severe chest or abdominal pain
Rapid deterioration of your condition
Frequently Asked Questions
Does TB only affect the lungs?
No. TB can affect many different organs. When TB occurs outside the lungs, it is called Extrapulmonary TB.
Does every swollen Lymph Node mean TB?
No. Lymph Nodes can become enlarged for many reasons, including different types of infection. The underlying cause needs to be evaluated when necessary.
Is Extrapulmonary TB contagious?
The risk of transmission depends on the type and site of TB. Active TB involving the lungs or airways can spread through the air. TB affecting other organs generally does not spread in the same way.
Can TB be completely treated?
With appropriate diagnosis, suitable Anti-TB Treatment and regular adherence to treatment, many forms of TB can be successfully treated.
Can I stop my TB medicines when I start feeling better?
No. Treatment should not be stopped without medical advice. Stopping treatment early can lead to treatment failure and increase the risk of Drug-resistant TB.
